Chinese opera costume, about 1930
Embroidered silk, maker unknown, Malaysia
Purchased 1994
In Malaysia, a friend gave me a group of Chinese opera costumes worn by [performer] Jia Lipu. They fitted me perfectly, and I was fascinated by the layering of shapes and the intricate embellishments and embroidery. I later wore them in the Flamingo Follies parades and they became a constant source of inspiration for my own designs.
